Waterford Harbour is a broad and beautiful in inlet
of the sea, more than three miles wide in places, which
drains three rivers. Viking traders created two sea
ports, which developed into the towns of New Ross and
Waterford.
The Passage East car ferry runs continously from 7am
- 10pm and opens up the Hook Peninsula to anybody staying
at Gaultier Lodge. Directly across from Gaultier is
the old fort of Duncannon, which was built at the time
of the Spanish Armada.

Waterford City was captured in the 12th Century by the
Normans and was turned into a stronghold. The Town itself
is a maze of narrow streets, which date from medieval
times. Reginalds Tower now a museum dates from
the 12th Century is more or less unchanged from its
original state.

The Tower was the location of the famous marriage
between Strongbow and Aofie the King of Lenister's daughter.
Close by is the central tower of the Black friars Dominican
Priory which was built in 1226 and still stands to this
day. |
There are also some interesting examples of Georgina
architecture, some designed by John Roberts who also
designed Gaultier Lodge and most notably Christ Church
(1770-9) and the R.C. Cathedral Holy Trinity (1793-6).
